OMII-UK

Category Cross-Omics>Workflow Knowledge Bases/Systems/Tools

Abstract Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute (OMII)-UK is an open- source organization that empowers the UK research community by providing software for use in all disciplines of research.

All of OMII-UK's software is free, open source and fully supported.

The manufacturer helps new users to get started with e-Research, they provide the software that is needed, and if the software does Not exist, the manufacturer can fund developers to create it.

The manufacturer also helps to guide the development of e-Research by liaising with national and international organizations, e-Research groups, standards' groups and - of course - the e-Researchers themselves.

OMII-UK Software –

OMII-UK's software covers a wide range of e-Research functionality. The manufacturer covers everything from the management of data and information to the execution of workflows and jobs.

The manufacturer also provides the infrastructure on which other software can be based. A short description of each ‘software package’ and what it can do is provided (see below...).

All of the software can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web-site.

OMII-UK Support –

OMII-UK provides comprehensive support for all of their software. The manufacturer can also help with questions about starting with e- Research. The manufacturer's support is provided via e-mail or by submitting an inquiry to the manufacturer's help desk.

1) OMII-UK Software - Conduct research with workflows –

Taverna Workbench - (see G6G Abstract Number 20514) - Uses workflows to represent the processing steps of a virtual experiment. Workflows can be shared and developed with the rest of the community, preventing duplicated effort and improving efficiency.

OMII-BPEL - Is a ‘workflow engine’ that uses the BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) standard. This means that your workflows can easily interact with a wide variety of different groups, because the BPEL standard is widely used in industry.

WHIP - Provides an infrastructure for ‘sharing workflows’ with other researchers.

Workflow Monitor - Monitor the availability of the services in your workflow.

2) OMII-UK Software - Control how & where your processing is executed –

Campus Grid Toolkit - Is an easy-to-install and easy-to-use software package that makes it straightforward to access and control all of the computational and data resources available to you.

GridSAM - Allows you to ‘submit jobs’ (i.e. processing of some kind) to the different computational and data resources that are available to you.

AHE - A job submission ‘Web Service’ that provides a set of generic commands to make it easier to submit a job to different types of resources simultaneously.

JSDL Applications Repository - A repository of job submission documents that can be searched for by category of interest, a GUI editor for graphically editing the documents and a job submission and monitoring interface that is Not tied to any particular set of Grid middleware.

3) OMII-UK Software - Control access and sharing of information –

OGSA-DAI - Helps you access and integrate data from many different sources via the grid.

4) OMII-UK Software - Develop your own custom software –

The Development Kit - Create your own ‘e-Research software’ by linking together the functionality of different ‘Software Components’.

5) OMII-UK Software - Locate the Web Services that you need –

Grimoires - A ‘directory service’ for Web Services. It allows you to search for a Web Service with a specific functionality that you need for your research.

6) OMII-UK Software - Monitor and control your resources –

OMII-AuthZ - Controls ‘access management’ for web services with per- operation/per-service granularity.

IAIK to BouncyCastle Replacement Library - Part of the OMII-AuthZ project: a replacement of the IAIK library by the BouncyCastle Cryptography library within Open PERMIS.

SPAM-GP - Used to manage a Shibboleth architecture e.g. to attribute acceptance policies, attribute release policies for dynamic portal content configuration, and push attributes to remote parties.

Knoogle - Knoogle provides a ‘brokerage framework’ that can be used to deploy partially or fully-configured brokers that query multiple service repositories, employ multiple matching services and apply pre-defined or custom selection policies.

OGM - Open Grid Manager (OGM) is a lightweight, open-source, ‘grid- management framework’ that provides a cohesive solution for monitoring and managing arrays of heterogeneous grid resources deployed within live production grids.

7) OMII-UK Software - Provide secure access to your data –

NDG Security - An infrastructure for locating data, exploring what is known about datasets, and accessing, manipulating and visualizing environmental datasets.

8) OMII-UK Software - Make Web Services accessible –

Rapid - Rapid is a unique way of quickly designing and delivering ‘web portal interfaces’ to applications that require computational resources, such as utility computing infrastructures or high-performance computing facilities.

It focuses on the requirements of the end-user by designing customized user interfaces for domain-specific applications that allow users to achieve particular tasks.

OMII-SAGA – Is a ‘programming interface’ that provides a common Grid functionality to tame the dynamic, heterogeneous and complex nature of the Grid.

OGRSH - The Open Grid Shell, or OGRSH, is a classic software shim that provides users (and more importantly, users' legacy applications) with the illusion of a single, consistent local name space (or file system).

This virtual namespace provides legacy access to both local file systems and grid file systems seamlessly.

9) OMII-UK Software - Visualize your data –

RAVE - Used to visualize very large sets of data, making it straightforward to find patterns, trends, and anomalies.

10) OMII-UK Software - Run Perl-based Web Services –

WSRF::Lite - A container Web Service that allows you to run WSRF- compliant Web Services written in Perl.

11) OMII-UK Software - Automatically archive your back up files –

Diaser - Archives the information stored on your system and ensures long-term data security at minimum cost.
