Abstract Ex-Sample is an expert (knowledge based) system that guides the researcher through a systematic process for determining sample size.

Ex-Sample computes minimum required sample size for over 60 different statistical analysis using either power analysis or traditional procedures at the end-user's discretion. Its determining process includes upper and lower limits, adjustments, and considerations of multiple analyses. Ex-Sample provides detailed justification of sample size recommendations. Ex-Sample draws on a statistical knowledge base to select the appropriate formulae, etc.

Product also computes the maximum possible sample size given resources such as time, money and personnel; and it adjusts for completion factors such as response rates, contamination rates, and exclusion rates. Ex-Sample compares the required sample size to maximum feasible size and uses artificial intelligence reasoning to suggest ways to reduce the required sample size or increase the feasible sample size. Ex-Sample includes context-sensitive help and a detailed report.
